Apple’s first foldable ships with two displays that share one shape. Everything the tool does is derived from the published pixel counts.

The inner and outer displays differ in ratio by about 2 percent. Apple’s own line is that the experience “feels continuous whether iPhone Duo is open or closed”. In practice an asset composed for one crops cleanly for the other, which is why the tool offers both from the same focal point.
1.42 : 1 is within half a percent of √2, the ratio of A-series paper. Fold the inner display down its centre and each half (1335 × 1878) is very nearly the same shape again. Layouts built as two facing panels will feel native. Wide 16 : 9 video will not: on the inner display it leaves bars totalling roughly a fifth of the height.
The hinge sits at the horizontal centre of the open inner display. Our recommendation: keep faces, logos and type off the centre line. The fold guide in the preview is there for exactly that.
Apple lists the 7.6-inch inner display at 1878 × 2670 pixels (430 ppi) and the 5.4-inch outer display at 1398 × 2034 pixels (460 ppi). That works out to about 1.42 : 1 inner and 1.45 : 1 outer, both close to 10 : 7.
Full-bleed on the inner display: 2670 × 1878 (landscape, as the device opens) or 1878 × 2670 (portrait). Outer display: 1398 × 2034 (portrait) or 2034 × 1398 (landscape). Those are the native resolutions Apple publishes.
Yes, that’s Apple’s stated design intent. Calculated from the pixel counts the two differ by roughly 2 percent, which is why a single crop works for both.
